Working is good for our mental and physical wellbeing. It provides many benefits including:

  • A sense of purpose
  • Confidence and self esteem
  • Structure and meaning in our day
  • Contributing to the wellbeing of ourselves, our families and our local communities
  • Financial independence

We know that people with mental health needs:

  • Are among the highest ‘want to work’ group yet;
  • Suffer far greater rates of worklessness (only 21% currently in work, compared to 70% of London’s wider population)

And even when in work:

  • 3 in 10 employees will have a mental health problem in any one year
  • People with mental health problems are at double the risk of losing their job compared to other disability groups

There are various barriers to gaining and keeping work including:

  • Low or out of date skills
  • Low confidence and self esteem
  • Financial and benefits concerns
  • Lack of information about support services
  • The low expectations of some social and health care workers
  • Employers' misperceptions and lack of understanding

Twining’s services are designed to enable our clients and partners to overcome these barriers.  See Our services page for more information.
